Williams is perhaps best known for its successes in Formula One over the past four decades, but this is just one part of the Williams group. Computational Fluid Dynamics
Williams have some of the most powerful and advanced ‘Cluster’ supercomputing capabilities anywhere in the UK. These are used to produce CFD (computational fluid dynamics) which are complex aerodynamic simulations of real world situations. As part of the collaboration with Aerofoil Energy, scientists and aerodynamisists have used their CFD capabilities to create detailed simulations of supermarket fridges and to refine the Aerofoil product.
Real World Aerodynamics
CFD is a fantastic tool and its use is becoming widespread, but this is only half of the story. Williams use CFD to develop an idea. These ideas are then tested in real world settings. This is made possible from extensive investments in aerodynamic tools, including highly advanced wind tunnel technology.
Aerofoils have also undergone extensive and independent ISO standard laboratory testing.
The result of the collaboration is quite simply one of the most advanced Aerofoil profiles has been designed, tested and launched and it is this Aerofoil which is producing energy savings of over 30% and delivering warmer supermarket aisles and huge energy and costs savings for leading retailers across the UK and oversees.
